RTCA DO-333, FORMAL METHODS SUPPLEMENT FOR RTCA DO-178C

CSL (Jeff Joyce) is presenting an introduction to RTCA DO-333 which, as a supplement to RTCA DO-178C, provides guidance on how formal (mathematical) methods may be used for the purpose of producing verification evidence suitable for use in certification.  Such methods can be used to find defects and other problems in software life cycle data that might be very difficult to find using conventional methods such as review and test. RTCA DO-333 was developed to resolve uncertainties about using formal methods to partially satisfy verification objectives defined in RTCA DO-178C.

Participants will learn how formal methods can be selectively applied in the software life cycle to produce certification data in compliance with RTCA DO 178C.  Several illustrative examples of using a formal method will be presented with enough detail that participants should be able to later repeat the examples on their own using open source software tools. This course includes a brief introduction to formal methods intended for participants unfamiliar with these methods.  However, the main emphasis of this course is on the task of choosing where and how to apply formal methods in the software development lifecycle following the guidance provided in RTCA DO-333. This course will also help participants with strategies to introduce the prospect of selectively using formal methods within an organization or program, e.g. cost/benefits and return on investment.

While developed in the context of certifying airborne software, most of the guidance provided in RTCA DO-333 is transferrable to other industries such as automotive and medical devices where formal methods are also recognized as means of verifying high assurance software.

ISO 21434 - CYBER SECURITY FOR COMPLEX AUTOMOTIVE SYSTEMS

CSL is partnering with Mirai Security to present an intensive 3-day course on implementing ISO 21434 Cybersecurity Standard for Road Vehicles in an engineering organization. Through live lecture-style presentations from industry experts, Q&A and exercises, attendees will gain valuable insights about this new standard and the overall challenges of managing cybersecurity risk for complex real-time embedded systems.

The software that powers a modern vehicle comprises more than 100 million lines of code across hundreds of interconnected modules produced by dozens of suppliers. The challenge of protecting the software-intensive functionality of modern passenger vehicles from cybersecurity threats extends across the supply chain from OEMs to their suppliers. OEMs expect their suppliers to help mitigate these risks by integrating cybersecurity risk management activities into their engineering processes and to demonstrate compliance with the soon-to-be-published cybersecurity standard for road vehicles, ISO 21434. 

ISO 21434 is being introduced at a time when concerns about cybersecurity are front of mind for OEMs. Automotive suppliers are being asked to demonstrate compliance with ISO 21434 to their customers and partners. Strategically-minded organizations recognize that compliance with ISO 21434 will be a significant competitive advantage in selling their products. 

Integrating cybersecurity into existing workflows can allow organizations to reduce the likelihood of an incident occurring and save time and money in addressing cybersecurity defects.
